Further information about the project “Between Forests” (2023–2024)

Between Forests developed through repeated visits to woodland landscapes in Germany during 2023 and 2024.

The photographs move between wooded areas, clearings, damaged trees, stored timber and newly planted ground. At times, distant buildings and urban structures enter the landscape, making the separation between forest and human space increasingly uncertain.

Some images remain close to observable details, while others are shaped by movement, blur and visual disruption. These shifts do not describe a linear process. Instead, they bring different states of the landscape into proximity: what has remained, what has disappeared and what may still emerge.

Individual trees sometimes appear less as elements of a wider landscape than as distinct presences, marked by posture, fragility and persistence.

Signs of use and management coexist with drought, damage and continued growth. Protective structures around young trees suggest care and regeneration, but also a landscape increasingly organised and maintained through human intervention.

The work stays with this uncertain interval without presenting loss or renewal as complete. The forest appears neither as an untouched space nor as a finished aftermath, but as a landscape moving between former and possible future states.

Context:

Looking back, the project also carries a personal undercurrent. It developed during the year following my grandfather’s death, when questions of disappearance, continuity and care had quietly become present in my work.
